A question asked by Puddles: Why are medications for Parkinson’s disease sometimes given to psychiatric patients?
What are the psychiatric uses of Amantadine, Benztropine, and Trihexyphenidyl?

Chosen answer:

Answer by pimpster spitty (spitchus)
The Clinic offers psychiatric services to adults with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and related disorders such as dementia with Lewy bodies, progressive supranuclear palsy, or multiple system atrophy. Disorders treated include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, dementia and milder cognitive impairment, psychosis, and other behavioral disturbances associated with these disorders, such as impulse control problems. Treatment of these problems includes both medications and non-medication strategies. Our goal in the care of patients is to minimize their disability and maximize their functioning.Psychiatric problems, such as depression, anxiety, cognitive changes, and psychosis, increase the disability associated with the Parkinson’s diesae. However, proper treatment of these conditions in patients with PD improves their functioning and the quality of life for patients and caregivers.

Question by Schatzi: Do Compulsive gambling and Parkinson’s disease have any link?
I have Parkinson’s disease and I saw an article that linked compulsive gambling with PD medication and my Neurologist has confirmed that there is a link with compulsive behavior and certain medication being given for PD. My question is being asked because I just saw a number of incorrect answers that were given here to someone that asked about it. The asker was told in no uncertain terms that gambling is a social disease and not a medical problem. Has anyone else here ever read an article linking compulsive gambling to PD medication?

How to Avoid Parkinson’s Disease?

Question by niceguy: How to avoid parkinson’s disease?
My aunt is diagnosed with parkinson’s disease and she not a very active person and my uncle probably died from parkinson’s. According to wikipedia, pesticide accounts for 70% of parkinson’s disease. Is there any preventions to this disease like exercise when you are young? I would like to have anyone with knowledge to share their experience with me. Thanks.

Top answer:

Answer by Rani
the exact cause of the nerve diseases are not clearly known like cancer. there may genetic, environmental, and other factors which cause these diseases.

yes pesticides are a cause but genetics is a big factor. pesticides generally come from contaminated foods, so if you stop taking contaminated foods then that pesticide factor can be blocked but what about genetics? you can’t change your genes.

however head trauma, and some drugs used to treat schizophrenia can also cause parkinson’s disease. so try to avoid head trauma.

As the cause of the disease is not clearly known so the means of prevention of the dieases is also not known. the disease can not be fully cured too.

exercise, healthy diet can keep many diseases apart from us . who knows one day may be researchers say that it can prevent Parkinson’s disease also. Lets hope for the best.

Question posed by Huey Freeman: your patient with parkinson’s disease is taking metoclopramide for GERD.?
Which statement is false.
a. the frequency of this metoclopramide causing extrapyramidal symptoms and depressions is highest in those with history of mental illness, children ans older adults.
b. this medication may cause drowsiness, confusion or depression
c. This medication is first line treatment for GERD.
d. this drug should be used with great caution in persons with Parkinson’s Disease as it blocks dopamine receptors and may worsen symptoms of PD.

The No 1 answer:

Answer by Mags
c. Dopamine antagonists are seldom used for Parkinson’s disease any longer. They are used as anti-psychotics for PD primarily. They most certainly wouldn’t be a first line medication for GERD in a PD patient.

That said there might be some benefit to the action of metoclopramide in the case of the common digestive issues of PD as it does increase muscle contraction of the upper GI tract.

a) is true
b) is also a precautionary warning
d) is another warning about dopamine antagonists which bind to the dopamine receptors but do not stimulate them. Because the PD medication (drug interactions) of this patient is unknown in the question, the statemtment is also true.

Take a look at this abstract to see if it provides additional insight into the correct answer.

While there might be a reason for prescribing it, it would never be a first line treatment for a PD patient as defined in the question.

A question asked by sokrates: Have you heard about the new way to ward off Parkinson’s Disease?
A new study now says that tobacco smokers are less likely to have Parkinson’s disease. And it does not matter whether one smokes cigars, cigarettes or a pipe.

My chosen answer:

Answer by randall flag
I don’t believe it. For two simple reasons, one is that the different types of tobacco have very different compositions, and if any kind of smoking helps, there would have to be a common substance that would help. Two, smoking those three types of tobacco is very different, for example cigar smoke is not inhaled, unlike cigarette. This combined with the previous reason makes it very unlikely that there is a single common element that all three can give to your body to reduce Parkinson’s. The chances are just too slim. It feels like propaganda to me.
