Question posed by Shawn J: How do people get or develop Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease as well?
I hear of so many young people including celebrities falling to this tragic illness. I’m just wondering how do people get it and is it hereditary or it just develops over the years? What are symptoms to both of these illnesses?

i’ve heard that cooking with or using aluminum foil to wrap food in can increase the risk of getting alzheimers disease. The reason being because it deposits bits of aluminum in the brain. All the patients who have had alzheimers disease; traces of aluminum was found in their brain after autopsie. But, I think it may be genetic as well.

Question by D S: Why is Deep Brain Surgery only performed on people with Parkinson’s disease later?
Why aren’t these electrodes set into the brains of those afflicted by parkinson’s disease earlier on? At the moment the procedures are done at the end-of dose period of L-Dopa… why?

Thank you!

Mainly because there is risk with any surgery. Seizures, infections, miss your target by just a little and there are serious problems, and it is expensive. Insurance companies are not about to pay for it unless you convince them that you have done everything else and nothing is working now.

A question asked by The Unpublished Poet: Why do people think that those with movement disorders like Parkinson’s Disease are faking it to get attention?
I think I have something similar to familial PKD (which is similar to Parkinson’s Disease, except sporadic).

However, there are people who think that people with movement disorders are faking it to get attention.

Why do they think that?

A question from Me, Myself & I: Do people who have Parkinson’s Disease get a lot of migraine headaches?
I have a friend who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease about 5 years ago. She takes several different kinds of medication for it as prescribed by her doctor. She has also been seen and tested by a neuorologist and they can’t seem to pinpoint why she gets these headaches all the time. She misses a lot of time from work because of these headaches. I was just wondering if other’s who have Parkinson’s suffer like my friend does and what she might do to help alleviate the frequent headaches.

How Do People With Parkinson’s Disease Finally Die?

parkinson's disease
by

A question asked by Walt1: How do people with Parkinson’s disease finally die?
My wife has Parkinson’s disease. She is in constant pain. She is losing her ability to do even the most ordinary actions of living. We wonder how Parkinson’s patients finally die.

Most comprehensive answer:

Answer by pottersclay75
Parkinson’s by itself does not directly cause people to die. With the treatment that is now available to treat Parkinson’s, life expectancy for someone with Parkinson’s is fairly normal and none of the drugs that are used for Parkinson’s have any serious side effects that could cause death.
However, occasionally in people who are seriously disabled (usually those who have had Parkinson’s for many years), their general physical and mental condition can either cause or exacerbate other illnesses and so contribute to the final cause of death.

A question from ataloss: Questions for those who take care of people diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease?
These are a few questions I need to ask of someone who actually takes care of Parkinson’s disease patients (it is for my project at dental hygiene school).

1. Are there any psychological effects of Parkinson’s disease?

2. In your opinion, what are some special needs of PD patients?

3. What type of special aids or equipment do you recommend having in a dental office?

4. What is your opinion on sedation in the dental office?

5. Are you aware of oral manifestations from medications that are prescribed to PD patients?

http://www.parkinson.org would be a great site for you to check out. There are forums there where you’d probably get the best info from the people who know best. As far as your questions go-

1. When people are first diagnosed, it can be devastating to them. They may go through quite a range of emotions. As the disease progresses and they lose motor ability and independence, they must also continue to adjust. They can have anger issues, anxiety attacks, and more.

2. The special needs are highly individual, depending on the stage of the degeneration. You would also need to work closely with their own doctor to determine how best to proceed with dental treatment. Patients with extreme tremors might need sedation for dental work to even be possible. Others might be incontinent, and you would certainly want to be sensitive to that.

The site should provide you with most of what you will need.
